New Environ Hearings

by Lionel Bascom — May 15th, 2007 — 1 comment

There will be renewed hearings into the federal government’s failed response to the attacks on the World Trade Center and its aftermath.
Congressman Jerrold Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties will hold hearings along with New York Sen. Hillary Rodham.
The hearings will look into the environmental impact 9/11 has had, particularly misleading information released by the government after the attacks about air quality, proper testing for toxins and the lack of health care for thousands of people exposed to pollutants.

  1. Why do the citizens of this country rely so heavily on the government? When the filthy, toxic dust filled the air in lower Manhattan on 9/11 and in the weeks afterward, didn’t it occur to anyone to test the air for its quality?

I would think that those living in the city would have located a research team to test the air and water quality. The community of lower Manhattan should be able to independently maintain awareness of the basic elements of life for its citizenry, and their continued reliance on government to determine and solve any health matters will only lead to frustration. They need to remember that “freedom is the will to be responsible to ourselves”
(Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols, 1888).
