Captive Insurance Investigated

by Lionel Bascom — December 28th, 2007 — 2 comments

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said December 3 they will investigate why a $1 billion 9/11 insurance fund, the WTC Captive Insurance Co., created by Congress to cover claims of sick Ground Zero workers, is fighting the cases in court rather than distributing money. Roughly 8,000 claims await judgment in the federal court system. The DHS inspector general’s review also will determine “what procedures have been established to receive, review and pay medical, hospital, surgical and disability benefits to injured persons,” as well as benefits to the victims’ relatives.

  1. If the numerous claims from victims of 9/11 receive the needed funding for the treatment of their illnesses, contracted from breathing the toxic air at Ground Zero, they will surely deplete the funds available from this agency. If the sole reason for opening this business was to compensate these victims, then it’s time for them to release the funds.

What really needs addressing here is not the issue of temporary funding and litigations, which is a sad example of the greed continuum in the midst of human tragedy.

Instead, there needs to be funding for valid, innovative research and implementing of a clear regimen that will alleviate these individuals’ tragic suffering.

The rest of us should pray.
