The Freedom Tower

This is a little convoluted but there is a subway train that will run through the center of the World Trade Center site, according to New York One, but the train is actually in a black concrete tunnel box, but technically, it isn’t a subway tunnel.

“That’s because the Port Authority has transferred the weight of the tunnel onto steel supports and is now digging out the ground underneath. Soon, the tunnel will be suspended in midair.

“If you come back in a couple of months, it will be looking like it’s on stilts. It’ll look like some of the old railway trestles you see in the Rocky Mountains in the late 1870s,” said Port Authority Chief Geotechnical Engineer Raymond Sandiford.

The work is necessary because the space beneath the tunnel will eventually become part of the Trade Center basement.

For now there are small underpasses beneath the tunnel, only about enough room for workers and small machinery to maneuver below as they excavate. Eventually the subway tunnel will stand about 50 feet in the air, on what are known as mini-piles that have been drilled deep into bedrock.

“We’re basically building this thing on stilts- about 450 stilts. There are 450 mini-piles that we had to put in there,” said Port Authority Program Director Mark Pagliettini.

Before 9/11, there was actually a station there. The Cortlandt Street stop on what was then the 1 and 9 lines. But the collapse of the World Trade Center destroyed not only the station, but also a portion of the tunnel itself.”

The Daily News revealed the disgusting act of disrespect Tuesday — and is adding $5,000 to the NYPD’s reward for the arrest and conviction of the graffiti vandal who defaced the memorial mural to the FDNY hero.
The 9/11 victim’s outraged father Tuesday compared the aerosol assault in the Bronx to desecrating his son’s tombstone.
“It’s unbelievable,” said Ernest Bielfeld, who worked as a Daily News paper handler for 40 years. “There’s no reason to do something like that.”
The News’ contribution boosts the NYPD reward to $5,750 for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the hoodlum. Bronx artist Eddie Rodriguez spent two weeks creating the mural, which featured Peter Bielfeld, an American flag and the twin towers.
The vandal’s tag — “SIPS” — was sprayed directly over Bielfeld’s face.
“I was really hurt that somebody would desecrate something sacred like that,” Rodriguez said yesterday. “Someone had no regard for someone else’s life and what they pursued.”
The mural was painted outside a bodega where the 19-year FDNY veteran regularly bought cigars. Bielfeld had an unlit cigar in his mouth on the morning of 9/11 when he wrote a goodbye note to his family and headed to the World Trade Center.

The trauma of 9/11 appears to have altered brains, a new study suggests.
Magnetic resonance imaging of the brains of healthy adults more than three years after Sept. 11, 2001, shows areas that have less gray matter volume in those who were near ground zero on 9/11, compared with those who were much farther away. In various views, the brain areas of 9/11 people had lower gray matter volumn. Notably, all of these areas (which show up brighter in this image) are associated with the processing of emotion.

SUSAN ARROYO of Tennessee lied about the 9/11 death of her sister. She later explained that she did so in order to help re-establish ties with her brother.

JEROME BRANDL pretended to be a volunteer firefighter from Milwaukee. Brandl spent a few days at Engine Co. 39 on East 67th Street in Manhattan. The Queens district attorney’s office has charged Brandl, a native New Yorker with a long criminal record, with scamming the Fire Department and city residents out of food, lodging, a ticket to Shea Stadium, money and other items following the terror attack.

ALAN BRAKER of Orange, N.J., who has been charged with filing a false report, told stories about nonexistent, missing children. ANGELA CESTERO, from Philadelphia charged for false application for death certificate.

A Florida woman, MAE CHRISTIAN, who reported that a niece had perished in the attacks. In fact, the “niece” was not even related to CHRISTIAN and had actually died in June, 2000. CHRISTIAN received $3,300 from Safe Horizon.

MAUREEN CURRY of Surrey, British Columbia, used the disaster to scam money from her employers and a member of the British Columbia legislature. She claimed her daughter had died in the tragedy and that she needed to be at her grieving grand children’s side in this the hour of their loss but lacked the funds to travel to Winnipeg. She was provided with $2,400 to assist her. Curry’s daughter, Carolyn Burdz, is alive and living in Winnipeg. She has never been to New York City, and thus dismisses all claims that she died there. Maureen Curry has since disappeared.

A Michigan man, DANIEL DJORO, who reported that his brother, Daniel Zagbre, had been at the World Trade Center for a business meeting. Daniel Zagbre was in fact a fictitious name the defendant himself had used. DJORO obtained $272,800 from the Red Cross and Safe Horizon.

A Florida man, ARIQUE DROSS, who claimed that his nephew worked in the World Trade Center and died in the attacks. The investigation revealed that the nephew was alive and living in Brooklyn. DROSS received $41,761 from the Red Cross.

WALDO FERNANDEZ of Miami stunned that town with his tale of unspeakable tragedy on 20 September 2001. Fernandez had only recently discovered he had a son and had made plans to travel to New York City to meet 34-year-old Eduardo Edmundo Raidel, his now-grown child who worked as a trader in one of the doomed towers. Days before the jubilant dad was to arrive, he heard that his son had died in the collapse of the WTC. The young man’s mother and Fernandez’s lost love, Dr. Sara Galloso, had also perished in the same tragedy, as had her husband, who was the father of her other children. According to Fernandez, all three bodies had been recovered and given a Christian burial. The reporter who originally broke the story in Miami thought to check further. None of the names provided appeared on the recovered bodies list. An examination of New York medical licences failed to turn up one in the name of Sara Galloso. The phone numbers Fernandez provided for Galloso’s surviving children didn’t work. Despite Fernandez’s claim of having imminent travel plans to reach New York, he could not provide the date or the flight number, nor name the address in that city where he would have been staying. The reporter now believes he was hoaxed.

A Utah man, RICARDO FRUTOS, who claimed that a brother, niece and nephew died at the World Trade Center. The investigation revealed that the people reported had never existed, which was confirmed by other family members. FRUTOS received $47,257 from the Red Cross.

JANET GOODWIN, 48, of 320 Post Avenue, in Westbury, NY were charged after she filed for an expedited death certificate for the father of Goodwin’s children, Giovanni Davi, claiming that he had died in the WTC attacks. Davi was living in Italy, on September 11, 2001. The charges include: Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree, an E Felony; Perjury in the Second Degree, an E Felony; Making an Apparently Sworn False Statement in the First Degree, an E Felony; Falsifying Business Records in Second Degree.

A Bronx woman, MARY GUERRIDO, who claimed that her daughter died in the attacks. In fact, GUERRIDO had been estranged from her daughter for over a decade before she died in 1994. GUERRIDO received $4,000 from Safe Horizon.

TANIA HEAD was formerly the president of the World Trade Center Survivors’ Network. She claimed to have been in the South Tower of the World Trade Center at the time of the September 11 attacks in 2001, and to have had a fiance or husband who was killed in the North Tower. A New York Times story in September 2007 threw her claims into doubt, prompting the Survivor’s Network to dismiss her.

SARA HEKRIY of Toronto went to a center for victims’ families and submitted a notarized document saying her husband had been inside one of the towers. A Queens man, CYRIL KENDALL, who reported that his 13th child had accompanied him to a job interview at the World Trade Center and had perished in the attack. The investigation revealed that the child never existed, a fact confirmed by other family members. KENDALL received a total of $190,867 from the Red Cross and Safe Horizon.

A Chinese man, ZHINGANG MA, who reported that his wife went to the World Trade Center on the 11th to meet friends for breakfast. The investigation revealed that his wife was alive and living in Japan. MA received $10,000 from Safe Horizon.

A Queens woman, LEEVICY MAUPIN, who claimed that her estranged husband had been a window washer at the World Trade Center. The investigation revealed that her husband was actually alive and living on Long Island. MAUPIN was assisted in the fraud by her sisters, one of whom, YVONNE PRESCOTT, notarized forged documents, while the other, ROSEANN NEBBLETT, falsely claimed that the husband had lived at her home. Both sisters have also been arrested. MAUPIN obtained a total of $89,599 from the Red Cross, Safe Horizon and FEMA.

DANIEL MCCARTHY told people at a resort casino in Lake Tahoe where he was getting married that he was an ex-NYC policeman who had been trapped in the rubble of the World Trade Center for 79 hours after he tried to carry a pregnant woman on his back out of the building. He said his partner, Dominick Impertore, died at his side. The NYC Police denied he had ever been employed by them.

SUGEIL MEJIA of New Jersey appeared dressed in surgical scrubs at a local police station two days after the attack, saying her husband had called on a cell phone to tell her he was buried alive with other police officers. Rescuers flew into a frenzy, redoubling their efforts to reach the trapped men, invigorated by the news that there were still survivors. Authorities checked out Mejia’s story and discovered a problem: The officer didn’t exist, nor had her cell phone registered any incoming calls. They quickly arrested her on charges of reckless endangerment, falsely reporting an incident, and interfering with fire operations.

LUZ MORALES-COTTO, 52 of Plaza Carolina Station, Puerto Rico, was arrested in Puerto Rico on March 18 and faces an extradition hearing on March 21. The charges were filed after Cotto collected $15,250 from the Red Cross, $1,500 from Safe Horizons and $5,375 from Social Security in survivor’s benefits. The complaint alleges that the defendant filed for an expedited death certificate claiming that her daughter had a job interview at the WTC on September 11, and was among the missing. Investigators found that the daughter is alive and is currently living in Puerto Rico. The defendant was charged with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a D felony; Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree, an E Felony; Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree, an E Felony and Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree, an E Felony.

CASEY OSHAY, from Parkway City, Arizona charged for false application for death certificate.

A Brooklyn man, GERARD RINALDI, who reported that his estranged wife was working at the World Trade Center and died on the 11th. The investigation revealed that his wife was alive and well, as RINALDI knew. RINALDI obtained $13,500 from Safe Horizon.

PABLO SANTIAGO, 66, of 801 West Park Avenue, Lindenwold, NJ. The defendant received $14,300 from the American Red Cross and he filed for an expedited death certificate, claiming that his nephew, Edgardo Amon died on September 11th. The defendant also submitted a false claim to Met Life for life insurance proceeds. The charges include: Insurance Fraud in the Second Degree, a C Felony: Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a D Felony; Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree, an E Felony and Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree, E Felony.

SASHE, 55, of 21 Odell Avenue, Yonkers, NY was charged for filing for an expedited death certificate alleging that his estranged ex-wife, Michele LaCrete Sashe, died in the WTC attacks. The defendant’s ex-wife is alive and was not in New York City on September 11, 2001. Defendant collected Social Security survivor’s benefits on behalf of two of his children. The charges include: Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, an E Felony; four counts of Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree, an E Felony; four counts of Offering a False Instrument For Filing in the First Degree, an E Felony; two counts of Perjury in the Second Degree, an E Felony and two counts of Making an Apparently False Sworn Statement in the First Degree, an E Felony.

SCOTT SHIELDS, the West Windsor resident became famous because of his allegedly false stories about searching with his dog for victims of the World Trade Center collapse. He later pleaded guilty to defrauding the federal government of Sept. 11 relief funds. Shields falsely told the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross that he lived near the World Trade Center before the Sept. 11 attacks and as a result received $38,906 in rental assistance funds from FEMA and $10,553 from the Red Cross.

GHERI SWEETING, 57, of Jamaica, Queens was charged after filing for an expedited death certificate for her brother Raymond Sweeting. She claimed that her brother had died in the WTC on September 11th. It was later determined that Raymond Sweeting is alive. The defendant received $2,500 from Safe Horizons and $13,881 from the American Red Cross. The charges against Sweeting include: Grand Larceny in Third Degree. a D Felony; Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, an E Felony; Falsifying Business Records in the Second Degree and Perjury in the Third Degree.

PAMELA WALKER, from East Orange, New Jersey charged for false application for death certificate.

A Bronx woman, ROWENA WEST, who reported that she and her mother were visiting the World Trade Center, got separated in the chaos of the attacks, and her mother was killed. In fact, the investigation revealed that her mother had died and been cremated in 1998. WEST obtained a total of $31,000 from the Red Cross and Safe Horizon.

A Mississippi woman, ROSALYN WHITMARSH, who reported that her twin sister had died in the attacks. In fact, she had no twin sister. WHITMARSH received $4,000 from Safe Horizon.

Here We Go Again… U.S. Terror Attack Seen Likely After Election

When the next president takes office in January, he or she will likely receive an intelligence brief warning that Islamic terrorists will attempt to exploit the transition in power by planning an attack on America, intelligence experts say.

After all, that is what happened to Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush at a time when their national security teams and their counterterrorism plans were in flux.

Islamic terrorists bombed the World Trade Center in February 1993, in Mr. Clinton’s second month as president. Al CIAda’s Sept. 11 attacks came in the Bush presidency’s first year. The strikes on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon happened as the White House national security director was formulating a comprehensive plan for combating Osama bin Laden’s terror network, which had declared war on the United States.

The pattern is clear to some national security experts. Terrorists pay particular attention to a government in transition as the most opportune window to launch an attack.

“If I were asked by the newly elected president, I would strongly encourage him to be extremely vigilant during the transition period and within the first six months of his administration against an attack by Al CIAda on American interests at home or abroad,” said Bart Bechtel, a retired CIA operations officer and assistant chief academic officer at Henley-Putnam University.

Mr. Bechtel said he thinks Al CIAda operatives will debate a future course based on who is elected.

Both Sens. Hillary Clinton and John McCain serve on the Senate Armed Services Committee. Mrs. Clinton and Mr. McCain, a former Navy fighter pilot, have had extensive exposure to military security issues.

Both have attacked first-term Sen. Barack Obama’s ability to handle national security.

Mr. McCain, Arizona Republican, has focused on Mr. Obama’s stated willingness to meet with any world leader, including Iran’s, without preconditions. Mrs. Clinton, New York Democrat, ran TV ads implying Mr. Obama is not qualified to manage an international crisis.

“I could see Al CIAda waiting to determine who was going to be the president and depending on which it is, taking an initial measure,” Mr. Bechtel said. “For instance, Obama may be viewed as someone who will accomplish what Al CIAda would like him to do, which is get out of the Middle East, and give him an opportunity to move in that direction. Failing that, they may decide to test him with a substantial attack on America or some American interest and see how he reacts.”

A U.S. intelligence official declined to comment on how the next president will be briefed.

Mr. Obama, Illinois Democrat, has vowed to remove all combat troops from Iraq within 16 months. He regularly has referred to the war against terror as centered in Afghanistan, while the Bush administration takes a broader view and sees Iraq as an opportunity to inflict a battlefield loss on ‘Al Qaeda’. The White House has trumpeted the fact that the county has suffered no homeland terror strikes since Sept. 11, 2001.

Retired Gen. Merrill McPeak, a former Air Force chief of staff and an Obama campaign co-chairman, told The Washington Times that Mr. Obama’s rivals are underestimating his ability to meet a challenge. Gen. McPeak likened him to Abraham Lincoln.

“I think people are only now beginning to realize that Barack is not your run-of-the-mill, ordinary Illinois politician,” he said. “He’s more like another Illinois politician who everybody underestimated.”

Gen. McPeak added, “I feel bad about giving Barack advice because every time I do, I know that he’s thought about it already. So I would draw him aside and say, ‘The minute you’re inaugurated, you will be tested.’ He’ll say, ‘Oh, you mean like Kennedy was with the Bay of Pigs?’ He’ll show me some way that he’s thought about that some time ago. The guy is absolutely scary smart. The real mistake Al CIAda can make is the one everybody else makes of underestimating the man.”

Mr. Bechtel said bin Laden and other Al CIAda leaders are likely weighing their next step right now.

“They are in a wait-and-see situation right now,” he said. “They run the risk, if they attack before the election, of really influencing the way the election goes, to their detriment. If there’s an attack, I really believe McCain is going to run away with the election, and I don’t think they want that. I think they really would like Obama as their first choice and Clinton as their second.”

Kenneth Katzman, a terrorism specialist at the Congressional Research Service, said “Al CIAda has a pattern of testing new American leaders.”

“Even now, Al CIAda is probably trying to plan something for after the U.S. inauguration,” he said. “I think to a certain extent, Al CIAda tested President Clinton’s administration several times. The response was ineffective. I think Al CIAda concluded it could attempt something as ambitious as 9/11, but concluded the time was better after a new president, who would not have time to review his strategy on Al CIAda. The time settled on was the summer or early fall, after a new president was inaugurated. They chose September because they wanted all the officials to be back at their desks from summer vacations.”

A Congressional Research Service report last month noted that January will mark the first change in administrations since the 2001 Al CIAda attacks.

“Whether an incident of national security significance occurs just before or soon after the presidential transition, the actions or inactions of the outgoing administration may have a long-lasting effect on the new president’s ability to effectively safeguard U.S. interests and may affect the legacy of the outgoing president,” the report states.

The report urges the Bush administration to deliver extensive threat briefings to the president-elect’s national security team.

Congress foresaw such a need when it wrote the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. The law allows for presidential candidates to obtain pre-election security clearances for its chosen transition officials so they can immediately be briefed on security threats by the outgoing administration.

On Al CIAda’s ability to attack America again, Mr. Bechtel said, “I think they are still somewhat fractured. If you want to look at it as a piece of window glass, it’s broken, but there are lots of sharp pieces out there. I think within the tribal areas of Pakistan, they feel pretty darn comfortable.”

The Freedom Tower, originally designed by Daniel Libeskind and architected by David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, is continuing to be built at its base in the northwest area of the former site of the World Trade Center towers. From a vantage point in an office building on the east side of “the bathtub“, there still seems to be no significant breakthrough in construction in terms of the Tower beginning its ascent above ground level.
Bounded by West Street, Vesey Street and the dotted-line equivalents of Washington Place and Fulton Street, the Freedom Tower has been a hive of construction for a couple of years now. Apparently, the new building needs prolonged and careful construction below ground.

It was widely reported last month that plans for the tower were found in the garbage by a homeless man.

Let’s hope the lack of progress downtown it isn’t because they lost the plans and don’t know to proceed.

The new office towers and Sept. 11 memorial being built at ground zero should get a state-of-the-art security center and a radio system that would open up 20 radio frequencies to police, firefighters and other officials during an emergency, officials said Thursday. 

Newsday, the Long Island, New York newspaper says planners are still deciding whether to locate the World Trade Center operation command center on the site, or above or below ground, said Steve Plate, director of World Trade Center construction for the site’s owner, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. 

The Port Authority’s board on Thursday approved $5 million in funding to look at options for the security center, which would serve five skyscrapers, a memorial and a transit hub by 2013. 

First responders were hampered during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks by radios that didn’t work inside the twin towers, making it impossible for firefighters in one tower to know that the other had collapsed. 

Plate said at an agency meeting Thursday morning that each building on the site would have separate security centers as well, and that equipment has been installed at the PATH commuter rail hub to allow firefighters to communicate by wireless radio. 

The agency, NYPD and Fire Department plan to work together to find the best technology for radio communications and will discuss where the center should be, he said. Several locations are under consideration, he said, but declined to name them for security reasons.”

“The owner of the World Trade Center site gave developer Larry Silverstein a six-month extension to build an office tower, the Associated Press said, giving him time to adjust the design to accommodate investment banking giant Merrill Lynch & Co.
A 2006 agreement between developer Silverstein and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey gave him until 2012 to complete the tower designed by British architect Richard Rogers, or give up development rights to all three towers he is building at ground zero.
Merrill Lynch, now located at the World Financial Center opposite ground zero, negotiated last fall with Silverstein and considered moving to midtown near Penn Station. But the firm decided not to move shortly after it posted a $2.24 billion (€1.42 billion) third-quarter loss, leading to the departure of its chief executive officer last fall.
The six-month extension approved by the Port Authority would let Silverstein build the foundation differently for the tower, possibly to accommodate wider trading floors that Merrill Lynch had opted for last fall.
“This extension gives us the time to design and construct a modified building foundation that could accommodate Merrill’s specialized requirements,” World Trade Center Properties President Janno Lieber, adding that developers still plan to complete construction in 2012.”

9/11 Questions Don’t Go Away Because…
I. The families of the victims still have not received explanations, justice or full compensation. Only because of their pressure did W & Co. create the 9/11 Commission-after well over a year-appointing Henry Kissinger (that’s right, the war criminal) before he resigned and Bush loyalite Philip Zelikow took over the whitewashed report. A couple of the families’ many key questions: Why did NORAD fail to protect the World Trade Center and Pentagon? Why did WTC 1, 2 and 7 completely collapse, when previously, no steel-framed building ever had?

II. There was no mention of WTC 7 in the entire 9/11 Commission Report; however, Larry Silverstein, the leaseholder of the WTC complex, told PBS the now-infamous words about Building 7 in the 2002 America Rebuilds program:
“I remember getting a call from the, er, fire department commander, telling me that they were not sure they were gonna be able to contain the fire, and I said, ‘We’ve had such terrible loss of life, maybe the smartest thing to do is pull it.’ And they made that decision to pull and we watched the building collapse.”

III. Lack of video evidence of the Pentagon (Flight 77) “crash,” for one. It’s said that over 80 videos are being withheld. The most highly surveilled building on Planet Earth only came up with 5 frames of footage (4/100 of a sec.) after six months–footage showing a fireball, not a plane. And 24 tons of the metal “recycled” by defense contractor Northrop Grumman built the USS New York (a “San Antonio-class” amphibious transport dock), christened in March 2008. But how did all that concrete get pulverized at nearly free-fall speed, creating pyroclastic flows of debris, while a hijacker’s passport survived?
