Seven years have passed
since that beautiful, azure sky
filled with black smoke
and the spirits of 3,000 souls
were ripped away from
their lives and loves.
Today, I awoke to a grey film
reaching across the same sky.
A September chill wrapped me
in remembrance.
And I tried to begin the day
in the usual way.
But the sky. the sky.
At 8:46, clouds parted
to allow the sun to share
in the whispers of those
now gone. \”Attend!\”
it seemed to say. and
then slipped back behind
the murky layers of liquid.
At 9:03, the sun appeared
again. \”Attend!\”
Clouds billow overhead
masking patches of blue sky
and we remember as a nation
but forget
as we mask our senses
to hands that outstretch
before us,
and silent voices scream to us,
\”Attend!\”
